The Sacrament of Confirmation confers special graces of the Holy Spirit upon the person being confirmed; just as such graces were granted to the Apostles on Pentecost. Like Baptism, therefore, it can only be performed once, and Confirmation increases and deepens all of the graces granted at Baptism.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church lists five effects of Confirmation: it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation [as sons of God]:
  • it unites us more firmly to Christ;
  • it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
  • it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
  • it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.
Program Outline for the Shrine of St. Therese

Lifelong participation in seeking to understand our Catholic Faith is part of our baptismal calling. In the Pueblo Diocese, we are asked to take two full years to study, pray and consider the teachings of the Catholic Church before receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Students must complete Confirmation 1 & 2 in order to be eligible for reception of the Sacraments during the spring of their second year. Competency standards are part of the curriculum. The youth must be at least 16 years of age at the time they are confirmed. Additionally, the Confirmation Candidate must have received the other Sacraments of Initiation prior to its reception.

Competency Assessment

All students entering into the Confirmation 1 program will take an assessment in the beginning of the year to assess their level of comprehension. If it is found that a candidate needs to gain a deeper understanding of the Basic Tenants of the Faith, the candidate will need to complete additional “make up” work to gain this vital foundation before heading into Confirmation II. The standards for these assessments can be found in a seperate document (see sidebar).

Each session is geared toward bringing students into a deeper understanding of God as expounded upon in the Catholic Church. Students are expected to have no more than 4 absences during the entire year. Parents are asked to call or email the Shrine. In most cases make-up homework will be expected. Please contact the office.

Retreats and Rallies are incredible opportunities for teenagers to be removed from the “daily grind” and experience the beauty of the Catholic Faith in new and fresh ways. For that reason, retreats and rallies are an important component of the Confirmation Process.

Throughout the year, students will partake in rallies rather than their regularly scheduled classes. Additionally, there are many retreats offered such as Steubenville of the Rockies, Totus Tuus, World Youth Days, etc.

CONFIRMATION II SPRING RETREAT: Students who are near the end of Confirmation II will partake in a special retreat geared toward the preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This retreat is mandatory and there is no makeup retreat available.

All Confirmation 2 Students need to choose a Sponsor. This person should be someone whose faith the student admires and who can continue to be an active witness throughout their life.

Sponsors must be Confirmed (documentation required), must be in good standing with the home parish (see form), if married, must have a valid Catholic Marriage (provide certificate), and must be willing to attend any sponsor activities and Confirmation Ceremony.

Please read the Program Outline for more detailed information. See this flyer for Sponsor Preparation Sessions.
